Rights & Responsibilities
Did you know that as a student you have the right to know your grades? You are also responsible for your conduct in class and towards other students?
That’s right – at Langara College we have policies and procedures, but they’re not all bad. Some of them ensure your rights as students here at the College. Let’s delve into some of these rights.
Rights
Course standing: You have the right to know what your current standing is in a course before the Withdrawal Date. Check it out here (Section 3.3 a/b).
Course expectations: You have the right to know what is due, when it is due, and the expectations for each assignment, quiz, or exam. We do this through the course outline (AKA Syllabus). Our course outlines should include instructor contact information, office hours, along with course schedule and any additional information that may be helpful. Learn what needs to be in a course outline here.
LSU Ombudsman: You have the right to have a safe learning environment. If you have any issues with a staff member or instructor, or you feel that you are being overlooked. You have alternatives. The LSU Ombudsperson is there as a resource to help you when you have unforeseeable challenges. Learn more here.

Responsibilities
Attendance: You have the responsibility to ensure you are attending and participating in class. You are expected to attend all scheduled classes, etc. and if you are away, it is your responsibility to let your instructor know AND your responsibility to obtain notes from your fellow students. It is your responsibility to understand that some coursework cannot be completed if you are not at the class. Please remember – you chose to take the class at that date and time. It is your responsibility to be there. Learn more here.
Behaviour: You are an adult and will be treated as such at Langara College. This means that your behaviour is expected to be reflective of this as well. There are a variety of misconduct issues that can happen, below is a short list of behaviours that are considered unacceptable at Langara College and may result in disciplinary actions.
- Bullying – other students, but also bullying faculty or staff.
- Begging for grades/Asking for extra marks for effort/Grades for Completion – this is not acceptable. At Langara College all grades are earned and not given. There are no grades assigned based on percentage completion. Grades are based on correctly answering or completing the various assessments in the course. Please refer to the Course Outlines that shows the grade breakdown for courses.
- Threatening anyone (Implied or otherwise) – this is unacceptable under any circumstances and is treated very seriously. Any type of threat is violence and not tolerated.
- Swarming – this is when a group of students go to an office of a faculty or staff member and start yelling, behaving aggressively, rudely, or in anyway threatening to the person that is getting swarmed.
- Cheating – this includes, but is not limited to:
- Contract cheating (getting someone to do the work for you)
- Taking information from another student with or without their knowledge for a paper, exam, quiz, assignment, etc. (Note: Allowing someone to cheat is considered at the same weight)
- Taking information from the internet (yes, we know about Chegg and all of the others), journal, article, book, etc. without appropriate citations (see Citing your Sources)
- Not doing work on a group project, yet placing your name on the title page
- What are some examples you can think of? Do you know someone who cheated? Did it change your opinion of them?
